Losing a loved one is a life-altering experience, and for children, grief can be especially complex. Parents and guardians play a vital role in the healing process.
If you know a child who has experienced a loss, you might be wondering how to help. The Dougy Center suggests a few basic principles to keep in mind:
- Speak openly and honestly about the death
- Listen
- Be open to different ways of grieving
- Offer choices
- Provide outlets for self-expression
- Talk about and remember the person who died
- Provide consistency and routine
- Know that grief doesn’t follow a schedule
- Get extra help if needed
- Find sources of support for yourself
Grief is unique to each person and every family, so adapt these suggestions as needed.
Day Camp for Grief
Camp Treehouse, hosted by Carilion Clinic’s Center for Grief and Healing, is a free, 1-day camp designed to provide a safe, supportive space for children and teens (grades K – 8) who are navigating loss.
At Camp Treehouse, children connect with peers who understand their grief, learn healthy ways to express their emotions, and discover coping strategies through creative and recreational activities. The camp experience includes:
- Connection: Meeting other children who have also experienced the loss of a loved one
- Understanding: Normalizing feelings and learning ways to cherish memories
- Expression: Engaging in healing activities such as art, dance, music, drumming and a ropes course
While children participate in camp activities, caregivers will attend guided discussions and an art activity focused on self-care and supporting their child through grief.
Join us Saturday, May 10, 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. in Bedford, VA (location confirmed upon required registration). Lunch and snacks are provided. Dress for outdoor adventure! Priority is given to first-time campers. To register, call 540-527-4859 or visit CarilionClinic.org/camp-treehouse to learn more.
